Ameano MOTS-c: the mitochondrial peptide explained

Ameano MOTS-c is a 10mg vial of a peptide coded in mitochondrial DNA, which is unusual in itself. Here’s where it came from, what labs study it for, and the compounds it’s often paired with.

What is Ameano MOTS-c?

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide. Most proteins are coded in the nucleus, but MOTS-c is coded by a short stretch of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. Changhan Lee, Pinchas Cohen and colleagues at the University of Southern California described it in Cell Metabolism in 2015.

Ameano MOTS-c is the synthetic peptide, freeze-dried in a sealed vial at 99% purity or better and labeled with a batch number. It’s sold for laboratory research only.

Ameano MOTS-c price and packs

It comes as a single vial, a 5 pack that saves 10% or a 10 pack that saves 15%. MOTS-c studies often run for weeks, so the packs are worth a look if you know you’ll get through them.

How MOTS-c acts in the lab

Its main target looks like the folate cycle. That leads to a build-up of AICAR, which switches on AMPK, an enzyme that acts as the cell’s energy sensor. In mouse studies that improved glucose handling in muscle and protected against diet-induced weight gain. Under stress, MOTS-c can move into the nucleus and change which genes are switched on.

Levels in the blood fall with age in both mice and people, which is why it shows up in aging research too. Start reading with this PubMed search for MOTS-c.

MOTS-c and exercise research

A 2021 paper in Nature Communications from Joseph Reynolds and the same USC group found that MOTS-c levels in human skeletal muscle rose sharply after exercise. In older mice, giving MOTS-c improved running capacity and grip strength. That’s one reason it’s studied as an exercise mimetic, a compound that triggers some of the same signals as physical activity. Most of this is still mouse work, and human data is limited.

What labs pair with Ameano MOTS-c

NAD+ is the coenzyme that mitochondria run on. 5-Amino-1MQ blocks NNMT, an enzyme that uses up NAD+ building blocks. SS-31 targets the inner mitochondrial membrane, and Epitalon is a short peptide from aging research. All of them sit in our anti-aging peptides or weight loss peptides pages.

Storing and mixing MOTS-c

Reconstitute with a sterile liquid such as our research diluent solution. A 10mg vial with 2mL gives 5mg/mL. Keep sealed vials in the fridge, or the freezer for long storage, away from light. After mixing, keep it cold and use it within about 28 days. The COA is available on request: email us the batch number on your label.
